Six stops in the center

Kuching's sights in detail.

For your first visit: Take the waterfront and bridge to arrive, the old town for street life and crafts and the museum for the cultural overview. The following visiting times are our planning recommendations with breaks.

01 x 45-60 minutes

Kuching Waterfront

Your easiest entry into Kuching is on the southern bank of the river: a promenade with a view of the Sarawak River, the parliament building opposite and the bridge. You can stroll here, sit and get to know the city without a transfer.

We plan to visit the waterfront together with Darul Hana in the late afternoon. If you prefer looking from the water, the city-and-cruise combo is another way to experience the same river scenery.

Darul Hana Bridge

The curved pedestrian bridge connects the two banks of the river. From the bridge arch you can see the promenade from a different perspective; That's why the short detour is worth it even if you don't plan a longer route on the other side.

Combine with Old Courthouse and Main Bazaar. You don't need a boat for the walk suggested here. The view of the Parliament building is an outside view, not an inside view of the building.

Borneo Cultures Museum

The topics range from nature relationships and history to art and everyday objects. The galleries include “In Harmony with Nature,” “Time Changes,” and “Objects of Desire.” This is our focus for visitors who want to better understand Sarawak.

Plan the museum as its own block and not as a quick photo stop. For non-Malaysian adults aged 18 to 60, the published entry table states RM50. Other age and visitor groups have their own tariffs.

Carpenter Street

The appeal here lies in the street scene: traditional shophouses, small businesses, temples and food stops. Go slowly rather than just checking off a single structure. The street is particularly suitable for a culinary introduction.

Breakfast and a walk can be combined. Our food guide will take you further for laksa, kolo mee and specific addresses. Temples are religious places; Follow local instructions and respect ongoing ceremonies.

Main Bazaar

The historic trade route lies parallel to the river. Their facades and shops with crafts and souvenirs make them a different stop than the open waterfront. If you want to browse, give it your own time.

We connect Main Bazaar to Carpenter Street and Waterfront. If you don't have much time, this compact old town arch is sufficient; You should extend your day significantly to visit a museum.

Old Courthouse & India Street

The former court and administrative complex shows the colonial side of the city. The inner courtyards and the ensemble are worth interrupting the walk; The nearby India Street complements the path with a pedestrian zone with shops.

Our proposal is an architectural and street stop. Exhibitions, dining or special events in the complex may have their own opening times and costs. Afterwards you can go back to the river bank via the old town.

Your route through Kuching.

Just an afternoon · about 2-3 hours

The compact old town arch

Start at Main Bazaar, go to Old Courthouse and India Street and return across the Waterfront to Darul Hana Bridge. The museum is left out of this short plan.

A whole city day

Old town, museum & river

Breakfast, a visit to the museum and a late walk along the river make for a varied day. To do this, choose the order below; Bako or Semenggoh get a different time slot.

  1. 08:30 · Breakfast at Carpenter Street

Start with Laksa or Kolo Mee and a quick look into the street. The food guide helps you choose. We would leave about 15-20 minutes walking time for the subsequent walk to the museum.

  2. 09:30-11:30 · Borneo Cultures Museum

This start corresponds to the published regular opening times: Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m., weekends and public holidays 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Last entry 4:00 p.m.; Note special closing days.

  3. From midday · Old Courthouse & India Street

We estimate it will take about 10-15 minutes on foot to get from the museum to the Old Courthouse. Check out the ensemble and complement India Street. Afterwards there is a lunch break in the old town.

  4. Afternoon · Main Bazaar and time to browse

Go back towards the river and take Main Bazaar with you. Leave room for a longer break instead of adding another distant part of town.

  5. Late afternoon · Waterfront & Bridge

Complete on the shore. You can walk across the bridge or stay on the waterfront. For an evening with regional cuisine, you can find suitable places to go in the food guide.

Own route suggestion. The walking times are estimated planning values based on the location of the stations, not measured walking routes; The pace, heat and breaks change them. The old town stops are close together, the museum detour extends the route. On special closing days, swap the museum block for more time in the Old Town.

Outside the city center

You need your own time window for these experiences.

A whole day of excursion

Bako: Rainforest meets coast

Boat arrival, hiking trails and the chance of proboscis monkeys distinguish Bako from a city walk. Choose between a day trip and an overnight stay.

Short or combined

Semenggoh: Orangutans in the forest

The shorter visit leaves one afternoon free. A combination with a longhouse or cultural village takes significantly more time; Sightings remain open.

Culture or limestone

Cultural Village, Annah Rais or caves

Choose traditional houses and demonstrations or a cave landscape at Bau. Attaching several big goals to one city day quickly becomes too much.

Answered briefly

Good to know.

The most important answers for your planning.

Is one day enough for Kuching's sights?

For a selection in the city center, yes. Bako, Semenggoh and the Santubong Peninsula are separate excursions. For the city, Bako and a shorter orangutan visit, we expect a three full day stay.

Which sights can I visit without a tour?

The old town, waterfront and Darul Hana Bridge can be connected in a separate route. The Borneo Cultures Museum is a separate museum visit. A guide is a supplement for background information, not a must for every city stop.

Where does a night market fit in?

Siniawan is an evening idea outside the center. Plan a return trip for this; it's not a quick additional stop on foot at the waterfront. You can find the classification in the food guide.
